Obituary

Elizabeth 'Liz' McCorkle  was born on August 23, 1940 in Florence, S.C.  She was the only child born to her parents, Alan and Ruth Gainey. Liz was a chubby child and family member's affectionately nicknamed her "Fattie" which stuck with her through adulthood. Unfortunately, Elizabeths mother Ruth Gainey succumbed to an illness and passed away on March 15, 1952.


Her father Alan later remarried Lila Verner. Their union  produced four children: Alan Jr., Jerry, Cynthia and Earl. Elizabeth and her family moved to the Bronx, N.Y. where she helped raise her younger siblings. Liz was a loving  and compassionate person with a beautiful smile, wonderful sense of humor and a bright mind. As a young child,


Liz attended PS 190 in New York.  She later attended Julia Richman all girls High School where Eleanor Roosevelt was the guest speaker at her graduating class. In June 21,1963 Elizabeth met and married her high school sweetheart  Jimmie D. McCorkle. Their union produced their only child, Crystal McCorkle. Liz became a loving mother and housewife.


Elizabeth loved helping others and soon pursued a career in Social Work.  She attended Lehman College in the Bronx, N.Y. and received a Bachelors degree in Social Work. She furthered her education at Fordham University in the Bronx, N.Y.  where she received a Masters degree in Social Work. Elizabeth worked at various hospitals in the New York Metropolitan areas as a clinical social worker.  She later worked for the Board of Education and retired from the City of New York in 2000.  She was a mentor and a true servant to many. She has counseled countless troubled teens who have turned their lives around. Her name is also located in the book of Who's Who at the National Reference Institute.


Elizabeth McCorkle transitioned peacefully after a long illness on April 7, 2025. Transitioning before Elizabeth were her father Alan Gainey, mother Ruth Gainey, stepmother Lila Gainey, sister Cynthia Gainey, and niece Sharell Gainey. Elizabeth is survived by her loving husband of 62 years Jimmie McCorkle, daughter Crystal McCorkle, son-in-law Sebastian Robinson, brothers Alan Jr., Jerry and his partner Doug Nixon, Earl Elijah and his wife Mary Joseph, brother-in-law Alvin McCorkle, sister-in-law Josephus Hoyles and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and close friends.


Funeral Services: Wednesday April 23, 12:30 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church burial will follow in the Salisbury National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m., the family will receive friends at 11:30 prior to service. Public viewing will be Tuesday 11:00 - 5:00 p.m.
