James Edward McConneaughey, affectionately known to family and friends as "Jimmy" or "Kincaid," peacefully departed this life on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at the age of 71. Born on October 17, 1954, to the late Janette McConneaughey Hunter, Jimmy brought warmth, laughter, and unforgettable energy to everyone who knew him.
Jimmy was a man of vibrant passions who truly knew how to embrace the joy in life. He loved to sing and dance, often filling the room with music and movement. A natural in the kitchen, he loved to cook for those he cared about, and he poured that same nurturing care into tending his beloved plants. He also had a playful side, enjoying his trips to go gambling, and he held a special, lifelong appreciation for his elephants.
A man dedicated to his loved ones, Jimmy leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and cherished memories. He is survived by his devoted, long-life partner, Johnson Franklin Mabry.
He was preceded in death by his uncle, William "Butch" McConneaughey; brother, Terry Hunter; sisters -Debra Underwood and Barbara Hunter Knox and sister-in-laws, Lori Hunter and Cheryl Underwood.
His memory will be forever honored and kept alive by his loving children: Rhonda Carter (Anthony Carter), Tangela Phillips-Lane (Charles Lane), Nakia "Peaches" Phillips, James "Jr" Phillips, Christy Phillips, and Terrance Phillips.
Jimmy's proudest legacy continues through the generations he helped build. He was a doting grandfather to 11 grandchildren and a blessed great-grandfather to 12 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life.
He is also survived by his brothers: Maurice Hunter (Connie), Rodney Hunter, Darryl Hunter, Carla Hunter (Sister-in-Law), Charles Underwood (Brother-in-Law) and his aunts: Janette McConneaughey; and Dianne McConneaughey. Along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
His presence will be deeply missed by a host of extended family members, neighbors, and lifelong friends. Jimmy will be remembered for his fierce love of family, his bright spirit, and the beautiful music and life he shared with the world.
Funeral Services: Saturday August 29 at 1:00 P.M. Rowan Funeral Services Chapel burial will follow in Memorial Park. Family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Public viewing Friday 11:00-5:00 P.M.
