Obituary

JAMES LOUIS SMITH, known to some as simply " Mr. James" or " Smitty", and if we go way back "Tick" was born in Rowan County to Ruth Wilson Smith and the late Richard Smith on August 13. 1961 transition from this Earthly life on October 31,2024.

A huge part of his life was music. Early on, he played drums in the North Rowan school bands, and when his Uncle Tony, who was a drummer, decided to form a family band, named S&W Express. For several years, the band performed R&B  songs in clubs and various events, up and down the southeast coast. Eventually went on to win on "Showtime at The Apollo" in New York City. Following one of the performances, the band was asked to go on tour as an opening act for the Manhattans, but God had other plans.

Later on James surrendered his life to God and Jesus Christ. He and former co-worker Rev. James Fowler, formed a gospel group named Triumphant. He also played drums at Livingstone College. On rare occasions James would sing too!

When given the opportunity to play guitar at New Life Fellowship Center, he graciously accepted, for years you could find him there practically every Sunday, until he had a  major stroke two years ago. James loved God first, family and church a close second.
