Obituary

Joe Wayne Hunter, Sr., 83 of Salisbury was born in Iredell County to the late Latham Turner on November 23, 1937 and made his transition on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House after an extended illness. Hunter graduated from high school, joined the US Navy where he served for four years, moved to New York and to New Jersey, where he retired from United Parcel Services as a truck driver. While there he enjoyed DJ-ing on local radio stations. He and his wife Beatrice made many friends while living there, but later returned to Rowan County to live their retirement life. He was a member of St. Luke Baptist Church where he sang on the Men's Chorus and was an Ordained Deacon. Deacon Hunter loved to sing and was always a dapper dresser. He was preceded in death by his father; Latham Hunter, and son; Joe Wayne Hunter, Jr. He leaves cherished memories to his spouse of 60+ years Beatrice Sifford Hunter, daughters; Brinda H. Houston, Myra Hunter, Billie Joe Hunter, sister; Jackie Peters, Flora Hopkins, five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, a host of other relatives, and friends. Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 12, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Luke Baptist Church; burial will follow in Salisbury National Cemetery on Wednesday, October 13, at 9:00 a.m. Public viewing will be Monday 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
