Obituary

On Friday, January 8, 2021, Mrs. Frances M. McCray quietly passed away at The Laurels of Salisbury. She was 82 years old. Born in Lincolnton County, NC, Mrs. McCray was the daughter of the late Beatrice M. Holt. In addition, to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Ernest E. McCray, Jr., her brother John McCorkle, and her sister Alma "Billie" M. Smith. Frances McCray was an honor graduate of J. C. Price High School, Winston-Salem State University, and the University of NC at Charlotte. In 1967, Mrs. McCray started Tiny Town Child Care, which was later changed to Home Child Care Centers. Frances McCray also worked as an educator for over 30 years. At the time of her retirement, she was employed by the Mooresville Graded School District in Mooresville, NC, where she was awarded Gov. Terry Sanford's State Award for Excellence in Teaching. Mrs. McCray served the community as a volunteer with Meals-On-Wheels, Rowan Helping Ministries, and Habitat for Humanity. She was also a dedicated member of Soldiers Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church. Those left to cherish her memory are sons, Ernest "Pete" McCray, III; William E. McCray, Sr. (Shanna); daughter Wendy M. McKie (Herman); sister-in-law Shirley Moss; seven grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins; and Emily Rivers-Stringer. Memorials may be made to Soldiers Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, 306 North Church Street, Salisbury, NC 28144; or Rowan County Habitat for Humanity, P. O. Box 3356, Salisbury, NC 28145. Graveside funeral and burial is Thursday, January 14, at 12 noon at Rowan Memorial Park. Public viewing is Wednesday at Rowan Funeral Services 10:00 - 5:30 P.M. Rowan Funeral Services is serving the McCray family.
